Travel Journal Workshop: Evidence and Inspiration
Four Days on Cycladic Island of Paros

The concept of "evidence" is the collection and use of materials while traveling. Ticket stubs, maps, train schedules, matchbooks, ephemera from the places one visits are used in collages to create a journal that has substance and depth. This is evidence of a trip or journey. The purpose of the journal is both to engage a creative process (bookmaking, writing, sketching...) and to use later as a refresher of memories and inspiration. Each student will be given a vintage Polaroid instant camera and film. Instant images are wonderful in conjunction with sketches and notes and it is exciting to create a photographic image immediately. Students will create one or more journals or artist's books and fill many pages with "evidence".

Techniques that will be learned:
bookmaking: folds and bindings, other book forms
collage: adhesives, composition, and layering
collection of evidence: the thrill of the hunt for inspiration and ephemera
writing during travel: 3 methods to use
photography: instant, film and digital
sketching: quick techniques using pencils, pens and brushes
Day one: Journal preparation, disscussion of book forms, begin collection of evidence Days two -three : Instant photography, sketching, writing Final day: Putting it all together
